Qualifications

  1. Master’s Degree.
  2. A minimum of three years math and/or science teaching required.
  3. Good working knowledge of mathematics including proficiency with elementary algebra and geometry.
  4. Science teaching experience.

RESPONSIBILITY AND FUNCTIONS

Classroom Work

Responsibility for working with 12/13 year olds. The math curriculum includes arithmetic, geometry, problem solving and elementary algebra. The science course is life science. The teacher must have background in a materials-based discovery approach to mathematics and/or science and be sensitive to individual needs within the group teaching.

Teachers are expected to create a learning environment which is consistent with developmental educational theory and practice.

In working with children and evaluating their work, teachers are expected to consider their social-emotional growth as well as their intellectual development. Teachers write two comprehensive reports on children each year.

Work with Adults

The Math/Science Teacher is a member of a classroom team responsible for the academic and non-academic needs of students.

Math/Science teachers work under the supervision of the Math/Science Coordinator who is responsible for the development and implementation of the curriculum, and with the Coordinator of the Upper School.

Each teacher participates in weekly math/science meetings and bi-weekly staff meetings after school.

Teachers are required to be available for conferences with parents when needed.
