Position Vacancy -Math/Science Teacher for 8th Grade (13/14s)

5 DAYS PER WEEK/FULL TIME

QUALIFICATIONS

1.    Master’s Degree.
2.    A minimum of three years math and/or science teaching required.
3.    Experience with inquiry-based learning.
4.    Good working knowledge of mathematics including proficiency with elementary algebra and geometry.
5.    Science teaching experience.

RESPONSIBILITY AND FUNCTIONS

Classroom Work
Responsibility for working 8th grade students.  The math curriculum consists of the second half of a first year high school algebra course.  The science course is a program called Introductory Physical Science, which is a basic chemistry course about the properties of matter.  The teacher must have background in a materials-based discovery approach to mathematics and/or science and be sensitive to individual needs within the group teaching.

Teachers are expected to create a learning environment that is consistent with developmental educational theory and practice.

In working with children and evaluating their work, teachers are expected to consider their social-emotional growth as well as their intellectual development.  Teachers write two comprehensive reports on children each year.

Work with Adults
The Math/Science Teacher is a member of a core team of teachers responsible for the academic and non-academic needs of students.

Math/Science specialists work under the supervision of the Math-Science Coordinator who is responsible for the development and implementation of the curriculum, and with the Coordinator of the Upper School.

Each teacher participates in weekly math/science meetings and weekly staff meetings after school.

Teachers are required to be available for conference with classroom teachers and/or parents when needed.
