    Travel the world of dance! Students will learn traditional folk dances from around the world, becoming fully immersed in the cultural customs, stories, music, and movements from Asia, Africa and South America. Miranda is a dancer and teacher with the celebrated dance company The Vanaver Caravan. She has taught world dances to nearly one thousand children across the globe and has found, time and again, that this class not only teaches children love to dance, but also enriches their understanding of our world.

  • PicoCricket Robotics (room 409)

    For 6/7s & Up with Walter Hunte

    Using PicoCricket Legos, we will be making artistic creations with lights, sound, music, and motion. Our goal is to engage children in exploring, experimenting, designing, and creating. We organize the room in the spirit of an artist's studio or inventor's workshop, with art supplies, LEGO bricks and other craft materials. We choose a theme that provides students with a common focus, but also inspires diversity of projects. As students work on projects, they may shift back and forth between building, programming, and sharing ideas with one another. This could be viewed as a precursor to the LEGO Mindstorm robotic system.

    KTUGA's mission is to bring golf to urban environments and to share this wonderfully beneficial sport with children, both on and off the golf course. Their dynamic methods include combining a variety of child-friendly, modified equipment with traditional equipment in a mixture of fun, creative golf drills and games. Players will learn and practice the four basic shots as well as the rules and etiquette of golf. They work in both indoor and outdoor settings and create various stations that act as our golf course. The KTUGA program not only promotes physical literacy needed in any sport, but also ensures that each child is actively engaged and having fun. By the end of this program children will possess the skills and enthusiasm necessary to advance into this game of a lifetime.

    For 10/11s & Up with Jodie Levinson

    Jodie’s class will focus on strengthening the voice through warmups, breathing and singing songs. Students will pick a handful of tunes from which to work to expand range, style and musical tastes. These are private 20 minute lessons:3:25-3:45, 3:45-4:05, 4:05-4:25, 4:25-4:45, 4:45-5:05. Jodie Levinson holds a BA from Skidmore College and has studied voice with coaches in and around Manhattan for many years.

    Each session students will work with clay under the guidance of SFC art teacher Diana Jensen. Some sessions we will focus on sculptures of people, animals, imaginative creatures and places.     March 5th: Cool Science Instructor: Stephen Gould,PH.D. Chemistry, Cornell University. Examine the wondrous properties of dry ice, which is nothing more than solid carbon dioxide.  See how cold it is and how it goes directly from solid to vapor without melting, and enjoy a bunch of amazing demonstrations based on these and other properties.

    March 12 Eco-Avengers Instructor: Anthony Cogswell of The Nature Co. It’s time to put our ideas for saving the planet to work!  We all know what we should do this to help, and this class will show you how to do it.  Meet live animals and learn how your actions help them in their natural habitats! 

    April 2  Paper Magic: Instructor: Stephen Gould,PH.D. Learn a bit about paper and do some eye-catching things with it--other than origami!  See different types of paper that do unusual things--like change color with heat and dissolve in water.  Get a take-home surprise.

    April 9 Magical Magnets Instructor: Harley Spiller, Museum Educator Learn about the science of magnetic power. Handle lodestones, experiment with neodymium magnets, witness magnetic magic (and reveal the secrets), watch actual levitation, and make magnetic toys to take home

    April 16  Chemistry Set Instructor: Stephen Gould  Perform some interesting chemical reactions and experiments that are not available with modern "chemistry sets".  For example, see how chemists can tell the difference between two materials that look perfectly alike and see how a chemical reaction using vitamin C occurs under the influence of light.

    April 23 MORE FISH Instructor - Dr. Merryl Kafka is retired Curator of Education at the NY Aquarium We’ll learn about color, shape, disruptive patterns, defense, and feeding strategies. New arts and crafts activities, and adaptation concepts will be offered to enhance the first session about the fabulous world of fish.

    April 30 A Bead on Seeds Instructor: Harley Spiller  Handle a collection of seeds of fruits, vegetables and plants from around the world. Discuss the earth’s largest and smallest seeds.  Learn which seeds are used in homes and schools almost every day. Study the intricate differences between seeds and nuts. Make art from seeds.

    May 7 H Two Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh…Instructor: Harley Spiller, Museum Educator Hydrogen dioxide might sound scary but it’s plain old water, and it covers 70% of our earth’s surface.  Discuss the vital nature of water for humans, animals, plants and all forms of life. What makes water safe to drink? Conduct experiments about the chemical and physical properties of water and the water cycle. 

    May 14 MORE WHALES Instructor: Dr. Merryl Kafka is retired Curator of Education at the NY Aquarium warm in An extension of Wonderful Whales, this session will focus on adaptations, migration patterns and feeding habits. New activities and crafts will reinforce biological concepts for survival including sounds for navigation and communication, and keeeping water.

    May 21 INVESTIGATE INVERTEBRATES Instructor: Dr. Merryl Kafka is retired Curator of Education at the NY Aquarium  A new exploration of 97% of the world's animals...Invertebrates. Students will explore the adaptations of some marine animals, from giant squid to microscopic life and use microscopes to see the small world of animals life.

  • Robotics (room 409)

    For 6/7s & Up

    This robotics program, based on the LegoFIRST Junior challenges, introduces students to the exciting worlds of science and technology through Lego Mindstorms technologies. This program features a real-world challenge, to be solved by research, critical thinking and imagination. Guided by adult coaches, students work with LEGO elements and moving parts to create solutions and present them for review. Students will design and build challenge solutions using LEGO elements, apply real-world math and science concept, research challenges facing today's scientists. This is a fun way to challenge students with science and engineering! Ryan is a 10/11s math/science teacher in the SFC.

    Quick Start Tennis? Children learn basic strokes more easily because the equipment and the court are age and size appropriate.     Students will learn to be global citizens who understands global interconnectedness, see the connection between local and international issues, who care about the welfare of others and promote social, political, economic and environmental justice. In this course, students will learn about the United Nations Millennium Development Goals. Topics are explored using thought-provoking videos, art projects and interactive games. In the second half of the course, students will pick an issue to advocate for, design an advocacy strategy to promote that issue, and finally present their project to the school.

    Calling all illusionists, wizards and tricksters Join us and become a fully practicing magician! This semester we have several tricks to hide up both your sleeves. You'll learn to perform amazing transformations such as the EXPLODING DICE, which transforms one dice into many, and the ILLUSION BOX, that transforms objects into something completely different. From there we'll tackle wonders such as conjuring flowers out of thin air.  We'll do mind-reading masteries. We'll add to our illustrious illusions tackling rope handling, including mastering magic knots for the MAGIC ROPE, and manipulating the STIFF ROPE with little more than your mind.

  • Cartooning and the Story Arc (room 306)

    In this class, we will be exploring the world of comics and graphic novels, and learning how to tell stories through a combination of words and pictures. Short projects, collaborative comics, and weekly drawing lessons will build up to a longer story. All of these will be collected in individual booklets at the end of the class. We will also be learning about the classic heroes journey and character development, both visual and narrative. Molly Ostertag originally hails from upstate New York, where she attended Poughkeepsie Day School. She now lives downtown and studies cartooning and illustration at the School of Visual Arts.

    Join us as we immerse ourselves in epic tales.  From Camelot we'll journey through the realm of the Fae, use the rainbow bridge into Asgard, and ride the ferry along the river Styx to visit the Underworld.  As we explore the myths of ancient Greeks, Norse, Celts, and others, we will learn to recognize the common elements and faces of our characters: the trickster, the wise king, the great mother and more. Once we have matched wits with the mischievous Loki, wrestled Hercules, ruled beside King Arthur, and followed the “hero’s journey”, we will craft our own legends and compile our stories into a volume to bring home and share.

A variety of materials such as collage, clay, construction and painting will be used to explore and investigate the concepts presented or artist techniques.

    Every child gets their chance to shine in Broadway Bound. This class helps bring out the creativity of each child through singing, dancing, acting and theater games. Broadway Bound Kids is in it's 6th year of provided unique performing arts classes for kids in the New York area.     Sarah Britt (Zumba Fitness Instructor) graduated from the Rotterdam Dance Academy with a degree in Dance Education and has taught musical theater, contemporary, jazz and tap in The Netherlands and Egypt. After moving to New York City, Sarah caught the 'Zumba-bug' and is passing it on to you!  Sarah's  Zumba class is an exciting, easy-to-follow and high-energy dance fitness-party.
