Bank Street Online

Minimum Hardware and Software Requirements

Bank Street online courses are delivered using two different technologies: Epsilen, our online course environment, and Blackboard Collaborate, our online real-time classroom. Before you consider taking an online course with us, you should make sure your technologies are ready. If you need help with any of the sections below, please contact our helpdesk@bankstreet.edu for more information and support.

  • Firefox
  • Chrome
  • Safari (Use the software update feature on your mac)
  • Netscape Navigator (not supported, please download Firefox or Chrome)

Are your pop-up blockers off?

Many features in Epsilen are available via pop-up. Use the links below to disable pop-ups.

Do you have Java installed?

Use this link to install Java.

Does your computer have enough memory and the right operating system?

Students must have access to a MAC or PC computer with at least 256 MB of RAM, and broadband Internet access with one of the following operating systems:

  • Windows XP
  • Windows Vista
  • Windows 7
  • Macintosh OSX 10.6 or higher

Do you have the software you need for your course?

Many faculty will require you to use the software listed below. You can purchase a copy of the Microsoft products for $40 through the Help Desk.

Are you going to participate in a Blackboard Collaborate session?

Some course instructors use Blackboard Collaborate to conduct office hours and arrange for group project meetings. To participate in these experiences, a web camera and headset are required. Blackboard Collaborate also has the following system requirements:

  • Internet Access- 56 kbps speed or above (Broadband connection is highly recommended)
  • Sound card with headset
  • 20 MB free disk space

Note: To participate in a Blackboard Collaborate session, you will need a headset in order to avoid feedback. We recommend the Plantronics Audio 630M headset because it is compatible with both Mac and PC and is proven to reduce feedback. Please email the helpdesk@bankstreet.edu if you would like help discovering the features of your computer.

If you do not have a built-in microphone and camera, contact your instructor to confirm that you will need these items before purchasing them.

The orientation takes about an hour to complete, including some time for practice. You may do it all at once or return to it at your convenience.
