On Friday, September 21, Bank Street—in collaboration with Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D-CT)—held a congressional briefing on educative assessment, a new approach to ensuring high performance of school principals.

At the briefing, Dean of the College Jon Snyder discussed the importance of evaluations that do more than just measure performance but actually help support principals to get better at their jobs. Attendees came from numerous educational nonprofits and federal agencies, and over forty congressional staffers attended the presentation. Representative DeLauro provided opening remarks, and Congressman George Miller (D-CA) was also present.

After the briefing, Congressman Miller, the Senior Democrat on the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, expressed an interest in learning more about the criteria Dean Snyder recommends employing when evaluating school leaders. The specific educative assessment for school leaders he introduced takes into account the context of a principal’s work, and includes establishing an academic focus, continuous improvement, curriculum and teaching, accountability and assessment, resource management, and partnering relationships.

This briefing is part of Bank Street’s ongoing initiative to participate in and influence development of educational policy that truly benefits students, teachers, and families.
