Bank Street Alumnae Present at the 2012 Child Life of Greater New York Annual ConferencePosted by Dara Eisenstein on November 06, 2012
On Monday, October 22nd, 2012, two of Bank Street College’s Child Life alumnae, Kymme Napoli and Lori Lerma, collaborated with Crystal Akbari from Mount Sinai to present at the 2012 Child Life of Greater New York Annual Conference. Their presentation was entitled: “Building Rapport: The Art of the Relationship and Its Impact on Child Life.” All three specialists have worked with children and families in pediatric emergency departments in the New York area.
The discussion focused on their work with medical staff in these settings. Medical staff professionals are not always familiar with the role of child life specialists, and specialists must frequently advocate for their place on the medical team during procedures and behind the scenes. The three presenters addressed the challenges of forging relationships with the medical staff to build mutual understanding of the role of the child life specialists, and how it impacts their joint direct work with children.
