Bank Street Students Make Meaning of Their World After Hurricane Sandy

Posted by Katie Peshut on Nov 2012

On the first full day back to school after Hurricane Sandy, Bank Street School for Children 5/6s (Kindergarten) made sense of the hurricane experience by building “safe spaces,” in the block area. These structures consisted of a “church where people could go to be safe” and a “tube way with walls that protects people from the river." The tube way leads to a shelter, which is “a safe space during the storm where people can play.” This block building motivation emanated from the students themselves.
