Bank Street Appoints Jackson Kytle Head of IPR

Jackson KytleJackson Kytle has been appointed Interim Dean of Innovation, Policy, and Research (IPR). In that role, Kytle oversees the College Library, Bank Street Head Start, the high school dropout-prevention and college-readiness program Liberty LEADS, Occasional Papers, and other grant-funded and contract-based research and policy initiatives.

Kytle will also lead Bank Street’s Middle States Self-Study, the decennial review of the College and its major programs, focusing on the Graduate School of Education. The self-study will culminate in spring 2015, when the review team from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education — Bank Street’s regional accrediting association — visits the campus. His work on the Self-Study is informed by his previous experience as a Commissioner and member of the Commission's Finance Committee. The Graduate School recently completed its accreditation review with the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, and now has begun the reaccreditation process with Middle States.

“I’ve been on the progressive path for many years,” says Kytle, who previously worked for Bank Street president Elizabeth Dickey as Deputy Provost when she served as Provost of The New School and before that at Antioch University. “I worked for Antioch for many years, and went from there to be President of Goddard College, which is very much in the progressive tradition of John Dewey.”

Kytle says he was delighted to come out of retirement to not only aid in Bank Street’s compliance with federal requirements, but also to facilitate the College’s self-improvement. “I’m particularly interested in how to create better programs, promote meaningful collaborations between the Graduate School and School for Children, and in ensuring that Bank Street continues to serve a diversity of communities through programs like Head Start and Liberty LEADS.”

Former Dean of the College Jon Snyder, who accepted a leadership position at Stanford University in December 2013, previously headed IPR. Under Snyder’s leadership, IPR aided the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in developing meaningful principal performance assessments, led an effort to integrate math concepts into Pre-K classrooms, and housed a program for the National Head Start Association to support culturally-sensitive approaches to working with early childhood dual language learners.

Kytle holds Ph.D. in Social Psychology from Columbia University and a B.A. in English from Middlebury College. He lives in New York and Vermont.
