12/13s' Poetry at Nuyorican Poets Cafe

Posted by Kate Marcus on March 11, 2014

On Sunday, March 9, the 12/13s (seventh graders) performed their own poems at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe on the Lower East Side. The afternoon's performance was the culmination of two months of work, beginning with writing and revising poems in the classroom and at home, and then progressing to collaboration with the talented and charismatic poet, AdvocateofWordz, who is affiliated with the NPC.  This is the 4th year he has come in to work with students, over the course of 6 weeks, on revision and performance.

In addition, this year the performance was kicked off by the showing of a group poem film project created by students about their experiences at Bank Street; the writing and compilation was facilitated by Nayantara Mhatre and Margaret Silver, 12/13s Humanities teachers. The film was directed and edited by Advocate, as the students affectionately refer to the poet. The event was attended by families, friends, and faculty, and with Advocate as the MC, the event ranged from thoughtful to humorous to moving.
