This course focuses on the role of literature in the life of the developing child as it facilitates and provides an entry into literacy. Students gain an understanding of the relationships between aspects of young children's language and what they relish in stories: repetition, rhythm, rhyme, and concrete and sensorial language. Using multicultural and nonsexist perspectives, students evolve criteria for judging and selecting literature to use with children from ages three through eight. Effective uses of literature for young children are examined, including reading aloud; telling stories; and using literature to extend the curriculum in social studies or sciences.
