Advocacy & Collaboration in School & Community

The course emphasizes professional ethics and advocacy related to the education of children with autism and other severe and multiple disabilities in the context of both school and community. Participants will learn strategies to facilitate development of collaborative relationships within the classroom, with related service personnel, and with others in the school and community. The course emphasizes the importance of understanding and supporting the needs of children from diverse cultural and linguistics backgrounds with autism and developmental disabilities and their families in obtaining needed programs and services in the community. Particular attention will be given to supporting children and families from diverse backgrounds who may not be primary English speakers, who may be poor or struggling with any of a variety of issues that may make it difficult for them to be active participants in the IEP process.
