As school systems across the nation embrace the new Common Core State Standards, it is more important than ever that educators obtain clarity around the components of Balanced Literacy and the best practices that make this approach ideally poised to address the new national standards in the elementary classroom. Through the use of video, live demonstration, and professional literature, this course will provide an overview of the conceptual framework of Balanced Literacy as well as the Reading Instructional methodologies that support it.

This course is designed to complement the course Foundations of Balanced Literacy: The Reading Components, but can be taken separately.

Marcela Moncloa, EdM, is currently an Assistant Principal in Hackensack, New Jersey. She also has been a Literacy Coach and a Bilingual and Second Language Education Consultant for the past ten years. Ms. Moncloa has an EdM in Leadership for Educational Change with a focus on Special Education and an MSEd in Reading, both from Bank Street College of Education. She earned her BA in French and Spanish Language and Literature from City College, CUNY.
