Multiple Approaches to Teaching Decoding
Focus on: Ages 5 - 8 Years, and older students in remedial settings

Our workshop will begin with a focus on phonemic awareness as a critical foundation for the understanding of phonics. We will then explore multiple approaches to the teaching of phonics that can be woven together to meet learners wherever they are, in terms of developmental stage and learning
style. Finally, we will investigate decoding approaches to develop learners' strategies and foster fluency.
Teachers will examine the principles and techniques underlying a variety of programs such as Sounds in Motion, Wilson/Fundations, Words Their Way, and Glass Analysis. They will design a series of lessons that weave at least two of these approaches together in order to create systematic, sequential, multi-sensory phonics instruction that meets the needs of a variety of learners.

This workshop is asynchronous, unless noted. Participants work at times that suit them best; however, there will be firm weekly due dates for assignments. The course instructors will act both as a leaders and mentors by offering regular support, suggestions, and direction.
