Dramatic Arts Activities for Literacy Development

Focus on: Grades K – 3
Course Number: TEWS726N

Take the stage and invigorate literacy! Phonemic awareness and decoding skills are essential to reading, while correct spelling and proper punctuation are necessary for clear written communication. Yet true mastery of reading involves understanding what you read and great writing requires the ability to focus ideas and elaborate on a topic – all of which can be frustrating for children to learn and even more challenging for adults to teach. This interactive workshop based on the acclaimed book, “The Playmaking Way,” will show educators how to use fun, practical and differentiated dramatic arts activities to enhance literacy development for diverse learners, including children with special needs, English language learners, and gifted students. As participants engage in lively discussions and role-play, they will learn how to:

•    facilitate dramatic arts activities as part of their daily teaching practice
•    support comprehension, composition, oral language development and vocabulary acquisition
•    address Common Core learning standards in reading, writing, speaking and listening.
