Message from the President

President Elizabeth DickeyHello and welcome to Bank Street. We trust our new website will allow you to explore the institution and easily find the information you need. However, we also urge you to visit us in person to learn more about the College.

Since its founding in 1916 by progressive educator Lucy Sprague Mitchell, Bank Street has focused on the education of children and the preparation of teachers and teacher-leaders.  We have deep roots and honored traditions that are almost 100 years old. But that history and depth go hand-in-hand with innovation and discovery. We are not captured or defined by the past, though we build on those foundations in planning the future.

Today Bank Street is comprised of our outstanding Children’s Programs, The Graduate School, and a new initiative: The Office of Innovation, Policy and Research.

As we prepare for our second century in New York City, Bank Street remains defined by its environment: A private institution in the public service led by a dedicated faculty committed to reflecting the City’s diversity.

Graduates of the School for Children are known for their inquiring minds and ease with others. Alumni of the Graduate School are known for being great teachers of children. We are a small and very personal institution. As such, please feel free to reach out to Michael Hansen should you not find the information you need.

Elizabeth D. Dickey, President
