On December 16, the Graduate School hosted a Weismann Symposium & Dinner titled “How New York City Principals are Creating More Diverse Schools.” The panel discussion, moderated by Rima Shore, addressed how leaders in progressive education can advocate for and support diversity in New York City public schools.

Six principals from local elementary schools serving students from low-income or non-English speaking families discussed issues such as rezoning, desegregation, and disparities of resources within school districts. Panelists included the following principals: Anna Allenbrook, GSE ’81, Brooklyn New School; Dyanthe Spielberg, GSE ’11, The Neighborhood School; John O’Reilly, GSE ’04, Academy of Arts and Letters; Julie Zuckerman, Castle Bridge School; Sandra Soto, Brooklyn Arts and Science Elementary School; and Arthur Mattia, The Children’s School.

The Weismann Symposiums are named after Dietrich “Dick” Weismann, who recently passed away in December 2015. Mr. Weismann was a philanthropist committed to innovative leadership in education.
