Special Education Leader Online Course Sequence

Bank Street College, in partnership with Putnam-Northern Westchester BOCES, is pleased to offer an online three-course sequence for school leaders. The sequence provides a foundation in special education leadership, focusing on special education policies and on effective options for meeting the needs of students with disabilities.

This course sequence is designed to supplement a New York State School District Leader (SDL) or School Building Leader (SBL) certification and to prepare candidates for special education leadership roles in schools and districts.

  • Become prepared to meet the special education leadership responsibilities in positions such as CSE Chair or Director of Special Education. Be able to support special education services and resources.
  • Complete all requirements within one year.
  • Benefit from engaging with an online cohort that fosters collaboration with other professionals statewide.

Three courses for 3-credits each

Students must apply for the sequence, and are expected to complete all three of the 3-credit courses.

Fall 2012

LEAD871 Special Education Leadership: Policies, practices, and district roles
This course provides an overview of IDEA and its implications for leading, teaching, and learning in schools and districts. Students explore leadership challenges in creating and sustaining learning environments that support both progress toward less restrictive educational alternatives and access to the general education curriculum for linguistically and culturally diverse students with disabilities.

Spring 2013

LEAD872 Special Education Leadership: Classroom and building practices and strategies
This course focuses on systemic issues of special education leadership. Students explore program management and service delivery with a view toward creating inclusive learning communities. Topics include curriuclum planning and instruction, policies and procedures related to behavioral issues, management of respources and facilities, and professional development.

Summer 1 2013

LEAD861 Developmental Variations and Implications for School Leadership
This course is designed to increase participants' awareness and understanding of the educational, social, cultural, and developmental implications of disability. The course focuses on the leadership implications of supporting teachers to recognize, comprehend, and meet the needs of students wish disabilities in their classrooms and school.
