Dr. Peggy McNamara works with Early Childhood coaches from Insituto Alfa e Beto. Rio de Janerio, Brazil
During the summer of 2012 Dr. Peggy McNamara, Chair of the General Teacher Education Department worked with ten Early Childhood coaches from Insituto Alfa e Beto. Rio de Janerio, Brazil. The president of this organization, Dr. João Batista Araujo e Oliveira, who is an advocate for early childhood education throughout Brazil , wanted these coaches to deepen their knowledge of child development and early childhood education and refine their skills and strategies in classroom observation and coaching teachers.
Using the theory of Developmental Interaction, and the pedagogies of observation and recording and collegial coaching, coaches learned how to integrate these areas as they observed in schools and analyzed together how they would plan to coach teachers to set up environments and provide instruction that supported children’s overall development. By the end of the ten days of intensive all day sessions, coaches had a framework for observing and analyzing the needs of an early childhood setting and strategies for working with individual and groups of teachers.
