Fingerprinting Through NYC DOE

NOTICE: Students who are NOT starting Supervised Fieldwork in the Fall 2014 semester must use the guidelines posted on the Fingerprinting Through NY State Education Department page

Please follow these important directions for the New York City Department of Education (DOE) procedure for fingerprinting. Fingerprinting is required for everyone who works with children in New York City schools. It is also a requirement for New York State certification. The DOE identifies any teacher working towards certification as a “student teacher.”

Even if you have been fingerprinted by the NYC Board of Health or NYC Department of Investigation, you will need to be fingerprinted again, as the fingerprints cannot be transferred to the New York City Department of Education (DOE).

Step #1
Get Entered into the PETS Roster

Students should either call OR email the below in order to be entered into the PETS (Personnel Eligibility Tracking System) roster used by the New York City Department of Ed.  Students will need to provide the following information: Name, full Social Security number, Date of Birth, Phone number, Address, Email address and identify themselves as a student teacher from Bank Street. Finally, if they know what DOE school they will be assigned to in the Fall (or Summer for students doing EDUC991).

1)      Call the Office of Personnel Investigation (OPI) at 718-935-2665

2)      Email OPI at PETSAdminSupport@schools.nyc.gov

Step #2
Fill out forms on the Applicant Gateway & print Fingerprint Referral Form

After being added to a PETS roster, students will receive an email from the DOE acknowledging they have been “nominated” and asking them to register in the online Applicant Gateway system, fill out all required forms, and print the Fingerprint Referral Form (if student needs to be fingerprinted).

It is preferred that students print the form before coming to 65 Court St., Brooklyn, but the walk-in center will not turn away anyone who fails to bring in the form.

Step #3
Getting Fingerprinted with NYC Department of Ed.

If the student teacher needs to be fingerprinted, the student teacher will bring the printed Fingerprint Referral Form to the HR Connect Fingerprinting Unit at 65 Court Street, Room 102 in Brooklyn for fingerprint processing.  In addition you will need to bring:

  • Two forms of government-issued photo ID (ex. a driver’s license and a passport).  Go to page 9 of https://www.uscis.gov/files/form/i-9.pdf for a complete list of acceptable forms of ID.

  • The required fee of $115.00 (NO CASH, see options below)
    • Money Order, payable to NYCDOE/DHR
    • Personal Check, payable to NYCDOE/DHR
    • Debit/Credit Card (except American Express)

Step #4
Register as a Student Teacher with the NYC Department of Ed.

All students working towards certification and planning to student teach in NYC schools must register with the NYC Department of Education via the online registration system. This applies to everyone, including student teachers and assistant teachers, whether in a public or private school setting.

Visit https://nyc.teacherssupportnetwork.com/studentteacher to create a user account and complete your online registration. Please note, even if you have already created a user account to begin the full-time teacher application, you must still create a NEW user account to complete your student teacher registration

This system ONLY registers you for student teaching, you will use a different database for NY State certification purposes.

Please submit both personal information as well as your student teacher placement information as part of the registration process. If you do not know your placement information when you first create your user account, you can log back in at a later date to add your placement information.

Please contact your Program Director if you have not yet been informed about your Fall 2014 fieldwork placements.

Your host school principal or his/her representative will also ask to see your registration confirmation letter.

Please enter an active email address when registering, as the DOE frequently communicates with registered student teachers about the full-time application and hiring processes as well as other important information.

Transferring Fingerprints from the New York State Education Department to the NYC DOE

Since you already have New York State initial certification, your fingerprints are on file with the New York State Department of Education.

You must have your fingerprints sent from the New York State Education Department to the New York City Department of Education (NYCDOE).
