Interlibrary Loan

What Is ILL?

Interlibrary loan (ILL) may be used to obtain materials from other libraries which are not available at the Bank Street Library. There are several ways to submit a request:

  • Submit a request through the WorldCat database
  • Fill out a request form at the Library’s reference desk
  • Email the Interlibrary Loan Coordinator Kristin Freda.

Request for items should include exact citations, and Journal articles should include page numbers.

Who Can Use ILL?

Interlibrary loan is available to current graduate students and faculty, alumni, and retirees of Bank Street College.

Fees

Most ILL items are free for graduate students, faculty, and staff, but if there is a fee for lending, it will be passed on to patron. Bank Street Library will notify you of any costs before finalizing the loan. Alumni are charged $2 per item requested.

Materials Available Through ILL

Any material found in libraries is potentially available, e.g., books, government documents, theses, and journal articles depending on the lending library's policies. Audiovisual materials are not generally lent by libraries.

The following items are NOT available through ILL:

  • Materials for class reserve, or group use
  • Whole issues of periodicals or bound volumes of journals
  • Bulky, fragile items
  • Reference materials
  • Rare or valuable materials

Delivery Time

Allow three to ten working days to receive materials. Journal articles usually arrive quicker due to electronic delivery. There is no guarantee of exact arrival date and time.

Notification and Pick-Up

When an interlibrary loan item arrives, you will be notified by telephone or email. You can pick up the items at the circulation desk. There is a sign out log at the desk that must be signed upon pickup. Whenever possible, we will deliver journal articles electronically to you via email.

Loan Periods and Renewals

The loan period is determined by the lending library, most loan periods averages around four weeks. If you need to renew any ILL items please contact Interlibrary Loan Assistant Debbie Taybron 212-875-4451. Keep in mind that not all libraries grant renewals.

Restrictions

Lending libraries determine any conditions regarding the use of their materials. Loans designated for "In Library Use Only" may not leave Bank Street Library.

Returning Materials

All ILL materials must be returned directly to a Bank Street Library staff member at the circulation desk and signed in to the log. Any item returned via the book drop will incur an automatic $5 charge for the patron. The library is not responsible for an ILL item until it is signed back in to the Log. If Bank Street Library incurs overdue fees or lost item charges, they will be passed on to the borrower.
