Taste of Continuing Professional Studies Workshop

• Introduction to the principles, tools, and materials of bookbinding
• Create decorative paper to construct an age appropriate book for classroom use
• Discuss how to overcome limitations such as materials and budget constraints
• Discover how to integrate bookmaking projects into the classroom curriculum

Presenter: Susan Seitner, MA, taught at The Dalton School, where making different kinds of books was an important part of her first grade classroom. As the school librarian, she brings bookmaking experiences to teachers through faculty workshops and to children through after school classes and special projects. Ms. Seitner has an MA in Elementary Education from Teachers College, Columbia University and a BA from Goucher College.

Learning Difference or Disability: A New Perspective (Ages 4 - 10)

• View learning disabilities on a continuum- high, low and in between
• Use case material to understand how the brain learns; define what is meant by Learning Disability
• Distinguish between a learning difference and a disability
• Learn strategies and techniques, based on practical applications of current research 

Presenter: Karen Brody, MS is the Pre and Lower School Psychologist at the Packer Collegiate Institute in Brooklyn Heights and a psychotherapist in private practice in Brooklyn, NY. She was formerly an adjunct lecturer in the graduate program in School Psychology at Brooklyn College. Ms. Brody holds a Masters and Advanced Certificate in Clinical and School Psychology from CCNY and is a graduate of the Mind/Brain Institute at Harvard University. 

Writing Your First Children's Book

• Discussion all aspects of good story telling and good writing, including tone of voice, clear dialogue, characters who feel real, and beautiful language
• Understand the writing process so that you, in turn, can help each student to find pleasure in crafting a piece of writing in his or her voice.

Presenter: Amy Hest is the author of more than 35 books for children of all ages, including In the Rain with Baby Duck (winner of the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award), When Jessie Came Across the Sea (Christopher Award Winner), and Kiss Good Night (a New York Times best seller and Christopher Award Winner.) Hest's focus is on family relationships and she wants you to know that everything she writes is personal! Ms. Hest has an MA of Library Science from C.W. Post College and a BA from Hunter College.
