Addressing the Core of the Common Core: Supporting Social and Academic Language Development Across the Ages
Beginning with infants and toddlers, language emerges and is strengthened through exposure and opportunities for practice. Effective teaching and learning include planned interactions for social and academic language development through speaking, listening, reading and writing. The Common Core Standards place these language skills squarely at the center, making the invisible, visible.
A panel of leaders and researchers, a keynote presentation, as well as workshops with experienced practitioners and researchers will inspire and engage you through hands-on activities and specific examples. As a participant, you will take away concrete ideas for immediate implementation in your settings.
Come and re-energize your practice by learning from the experts in the field. They will share multiple ways to create and support social and academic language growth in today's diverse educational settings that include English language learners as well as those who struggle in their native language.

Conversation and Discourse: The Core of Academic and Social Language Development Across the Ages
Communicative interactions in the form of conversations and discourse may be some of the most important components of education from early childhood through high school. Conversations have a significant presence in the Common Core State Standards across the ages, yet supporting them in multilingual populations can be very challenging. Research shows that true conversations and discussions may be among the weakest links in our educational systems. Why is this so important? How can we increase and enhance the meaningful conversations we have with students every day? A look at recent research and policy will show how to effectively build developmentally appropriate interactions into your daily schedule regardless of your setting: early childhood, childhood, and beyond.

The ultimate goals of the series are:
- To support the professional growth of all classroom educators: Dual Language, Bilingual, ESL, Special Ed, and Monolingual teachers in Pre-K to high school settings;
- To promote discussions on language learning principles and methodology with a focus on multiple ways of learning and classroom applications in all content areas;
- To foster the exchange of ideas by providing opportunities for networking among teachers and leaders across schools with a diverse range of learners.
