Annual Fund Basics

Charitable gifts from parents, grandparents, alumni and friends are an important component of our educational system. We rely on our entire community to provide the special education our children receive so as to maintain our position as one of New York’s most preeminent and established progressive schools.

As an independent school, there are two main sources of income: 1) tuition and fees, and 2) fundraising. At Bank Street, tuition and fees only cover about 95% of the budgeted costs, the rest is made up through fundraising. In fact, there is a gap of around $2,000 between tuition revenue and the cost to educate each child.

All the funds raised for the School for Children Annual Fund go directly to the School for Children and must be used in the current fiscal year. As soon as we receive a check, we are able to use it immediately, which means our children benefit today from your gifts.

Your donations to the Annual Fund enable the School to:
• Accept a wide range of families to ensure the socio-economic diversity of the community.
• Provide competitive salaries for our faculty so we can attract and retain the best teachers in progressive education.
• Provide summer professional development stipends for teachers to enhance our curriculum.
• Continue programs such as Winter Fest, the Science Expo, and Spanish immersion in the Lower School.

Without the Annual Fund, we would not be able to continue our programming. It is that important.
