Baking with Sweet Loren
Loren Brill graduated in 1998 from the Bank Street School for Children. The following year she went to Riverdale Country School and then to the University of Southern California. She was soon diagnosed with Lymphoma and finally beat the disease at age 22. She says she began to look at sweets differently, “craving only the best ingredients.” That’s when she started Sweet Loren’s, a ready-to-bake cookie dough and brownie batter company that uses all natural, whole-food ingredients, unrefined and unprocessed.
“I believe that a healthy lifestyle includes treating yourself to the very best. By being a ready-to-bake cookie dough and brownie batter company, I felt like I could add value to the market place by creating a convenient, healthier product that never sacrificed taste,” says Loren.
“I know freshly baked, warm cookies are part of some of my most favorite memories when I was younger (well, now too, come to think of it) but by making it easy to buy our products, we are hopefully accomplishing a couple important things: giving kids and adults a way to learn how to bake easily; bringing delicious, healthier ingredients to our food system; and giving families/friends more excuses to enjoy those sweet, precious moments in life.” And that is exactly what Loren did this past summer when she visited the Bank Street Summer Camp.
Loren visited two camp groups and shared some of her baking secrets with campers. Along with making cookies from scratch, campers shared their feelings about nutrition and what it means to eat healthfully and nutritiously, even while eating baked goods and sweets.
Bank Street Camp has always provided the best food for campers. By balancing the right food groups and creating the right positive atmosphere for campers to eat in, the Bank Street Camp staff have always prided themselves at making sure all campers are properly fueled for the day.
Loren’s ready-to-bake desserts are now available at many locations around New York City. The batter is a tasty, all natural substitute to processed sugar and it provides an opportunity to have fun while making and baking brownies and cookies.
The Bank Street Summer Camp looks forward to many more visits from Loren.
