Upper Camp Overview

The Upper Camp is uniquely designed to meet the needs of middle school children, ages 8-14. Campers choose from a variety of focused programs and also participate in larger unit activities, including swimming twice a week and community focused field trips. During their semiweekly swim, time is divided between instruction and organized free swim where the same counselors work with the same campers each time.

Below are Upper Camp dates and descriptions of each program.

Session 1: June 18th-29th

Session 2: July 2nd-August 3rd

Session 3: August 6th-10th

Please note: The grades listed are the grades that the camper will be going into for Fall 2012.

  • Theater

    Cabaret, Session 1 (June 18th-29th) Grades 3-8

Many reality shows have been created around judging theater and the performing arts. We often forget that theater can be free from competition.  It is our mission in the Theater Program at Bank Street Summer Camp to create a non-judgmental, fun filled environment, where kids can learn to slip off the shackles of failure and success to simply enjoy the act of performing.  Cabaret promises to do just that in creating Bank Street Summer Camp's very own night club, down in the auditorium. This old-fashioned, candle-lit cabaret will be a safe but dynamic environment where expression, passion, and luxurious enjoyment are welcomed. Through the session campers will write their own skits and rehearse musical numbers for a final performance filled with song, dance, laughter and tears. In just two weeks, campers will learn to sing and dance their way around their own inner critic and into your hearts.

Included will be the usual Bank Street Summer Camp fun: sports and games in Riverside Park, camp wide programs with the other Upper Camp groups, an overnight trip to Six Flags Great Adventure, and of course the Bankstreet swim program.

    Bank Street On Broadway, Session 2 (July 2nd-August 3rd) Grades 3 & 4

Come and experience all the different phases of creating and putting on a musical.  With a focus on collaboration (which will be defined as a group), campers write an original 20-minute musical (book, music, and lyrics), design and craft sets and costumes, and finally perform the piece (as actors, dancers, stage managers, lighting and sound designers, and musicians).  Along the way, campers also learn the basic terminology of musicals and theater, work hard towards a common goal, and have a good time.  Every camper will have an essential role in the creation of the final product.  All campers need is a water bottle and a great attitude.

    Musical Theater, Session 2 (July 2nd-August 3rd) Grades 5-8

This year the Musical Theater program will be performing Once On This Island.

The Bank Street Summer Theater Program operates from a basis of collaboration between campers and instructors in a supportive and nurturing environment.  Instructors guide children through a variety of group exercises and activities to give them a sense of ownership of their performance.  Through physical and vocal expression, a sense of play is cultivated and an ensemble is born. All children are asked to start from where they are and encouraged to go to the edge of their imagination. Everyone is expected to work hard, play hard and have lots of fun.

The focus of Session 2 will be a “Production Workshop.” During this session, campers mount a full-scale musical production. Students develop skills in acting, singing and dance. We feel that it is important to include everyone as much as possible, and we take special care to ensure each camper has a substantial role.  During each of our sessions, musical theater campers will be rehearsing, creating, collaborating, and performing.  As campers prepare these performances, they’ll be exploring acting, improvisation, movement, dance, and other aspects of the performing arts process.  Campers will also be attending a Broadway show. In previous years, the theater program has seen shows such as In the Heights, The Fantastiks, The Wiz and Sister Act!

The Theater program will also be involved in the usual Bank Street Summer camp fun: sports and games in Riverside Park, camp wide programs with the other Upper Camp groups, and of course the Bankstreet swim program.
