Established in 2015, the Dorothy Carter Writer-in-Residence program invites a prominent author to work with School for Children students to craft their writing each spring. Dorothy Carter was Bank Street’s first African American faculty member, writer of highly acclaimed children’s books, chair of the Bank Street Writers Lab, and Broadway actress. We lost Dorothy in 2012, but continue to celebrate her contributions to children’s literature through the Writer-in-Residence program.
2025 Dorothy Carter Writer-in-Residence: Ruth ChanRuth Chan is an illustrator and author who spent her childhood tobogganing in Canada, her teens in Hong Kong and China, a number of years studying art and education, and a decade working with youth and families in underserved communities. She now writes and illustrates children’s books and comics in Brooklyn NY and remains a proud Canadian. Visit her website for more information.
Olugbemisola Rhuday-Perkovich is the NAACP Image-Award nominated author of several children’s books, including Operation Sisterhood, It Doesn’t Take a Genius, and Two Naomis, co-authored with Audrey Vernick. She also writes picture books, easy readers, and nonfiction like Makeda Makes A Birthday Treat, Saving Earth: Climate Change and the Fight for Our Future, and Someday Is Now: Clara Luper and the 1958 Oklahoma City Sit-Ins.
Olugbemisola was born in NYC, then spent many years as the “new kid” at a lot of schools in different cities. Now, she lives with her family back in NYC where she writes, makes things, talks back to her cat, and needs to get more sleep. Visit her website for more information.
Karina Yan Glaser is the 2023 Dorothy Carter Writer-in-Residence. Karina Yan Glaser is the New York Times bestselling author of the Vanderbeeker series and the standalone middle grade novel A Duet for Home.
Karina is a contributing editor for Book Riot and lives in Harlem with her husband, two kids, and an assortment of rescue animals and houseplants. One of her proudest achievements is raising two kids who can’t go anywhere without a book. Find her online at Karina Yan Glaser.
Nicole C. Kear was the 2022 Dorothy Carter Writer-in-Residence. Nicole grew up in New York City, where she still lives, with her husband, three firecracker kids and a ridiculously fluffy hamster.
Nicole has written lots of essays and a memoir, Now I See You, for grownups; and The Fix-It Friends series and Foreverland for kids. She also co-wrote The Startup Squad series with Brian Weisfeld. She has a bunch of fancy, boring diplomas, and one red clown nose from circus school. Seriously. Nicole worked with the 9/10s classrooms in April on creative fiction writing. School for Children Students Explore Creative Writing with Writer-In-Residence Nicole Kear
Carlos Hernandez was the 2021 Dorothy Carter Writer-in-Residence. Carlos has published more than thirty works of fiction, poetry, and drama, including Sal and Gabi Break the Universe, for which he won a Pura Belpré Author Award from the American Library Association. He is an English professor at City University of New York, and he loves to both play games and design them. He lives with his wife, Claire, in Queens, New York.

Jerry Craft was Bank Street’s 2020 Dorothy Carter Writer-in-Residence. Jerry Craft is an award-winning author and illustrator who has created numerous picture books and graphic and middle grade novels. He is also known for his syndicated newspaper comic strip Mama’s Boyz.
Jerry was born in Harlem and grew up in nearby Washington Heights. He is a graduate of The Fieldston School and received his B.F.A. from the School of Visual Arts. Jerry worked in the School for Children’s 9/10s classes on creative writing in April.

Emma Otheguy, PhD, will be our 5th annual Dorothy Carter Writer-in-Residence. Emma will work with the 9/10s classrooms on creative writing in April of 2019. Emma is the author of Pope Francis: Builder of Bridges (Bloomsbury 2018). Her middle grade novel Silver Meadows Summer (Alfred A. Knopf) will be published in 2019. Read more

Adam Gidwitz, GSE ’08, and Newbery Honoree for An Inquisitor’s Tale, worked with the 9/10s on novel writing.
Newbery medalist and author of The Crossover, Kwame Alexander inaugurated the program as the first Dorothy Carter Writer-in-Residence and worked with the 9/10s on their poetry.
