At Bank Street, we recognize that dynamic learning environments that actively engage children with materials, ideas, and people are crucial in supporting their growth and development.
This summer, Bank Street College completed extensive renovations to key areas of the school, including the roof and gymnasium, to enrich these spaces and create more functional settings for children across the School for Children, Family Center, Liberty LEADS, Summer Camp, and other programs to play and learn.
Originally built in 1971, the roof required updates to improve its condition and ensure continued functionality. The renovation also included upgrades to the design, with new surfaces for safety and dedicated play areas. The gymnasium project focused on refinishing the floor to improve its durability, appearance, and overall usability.
“We are thrilled to provide our students and community with a revitalized space that encourages active learning and play while ensuring safety and the integrity of our building for years to come,” said Suleyni Abreu, Deputy Chief Operating Officer, Bank Street College. “The updates to the roof included reinforcing the structure and redesigning the layout with the addition of new play features, while the gym floor was refurbished with a fresh finish and colored markings to support various sports and activities.”
The roof renovation began on June 3. Planning for the three-month project was spearheaded by Suleyni Abreu in collaboration with our Facilities Team, Physical Education and Movement Team, and School for Children faculty, staff, and leadership. The College also consulted our partners at Hoffmann Architects and Blueprint and worked on the construction with Preserv Building Restoration Management, Inc.
Improvements to the gym included refinishing and restaining the gym floor, which features a new center court logo. These updates enhance the gym’s capacity for a variety of sports and other activities, making it a more engaging and workable space for students and community events.
The roof renovation included installing soft rubber tiles to add color to the flooring and create a running track and end zones, painting new four-square courts and baseball bases, and securing new pads on the side of the roof. Additionally, the project focused on improving the drainage system.
“By working closely with teachers, leadership, and our Facilities Team, we were able to design updated recreational areas that meet the needs of our students and support a wide range of activities and events,” said Doug Knecht, Dean of Children’s Programs and Head of the School for Children. “We look forward to seeing our school community enjoy these new spaces during this school year and beyond.”
