New York City Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña visited the Bank Street Book Store on December 2 as part of NYC Reads 365, an initiative by the Department of Education to encourage families to read together every day. Fariña met with grandparents from across the city—many of whom are primary caregivers—who came to discuss meaningful ways to support and connect with their grandchildren.
“At Bank Street, we believe that it is important for family to be part of the process of supporting children in their development in literacy and reading,” said Shael Polakow-Suransky, Bank Street’s president.
Fariña served as an adjunct faculty member at Bank Street Graduate School of Education earlier in her career, and at the event she noted her love of the College’s bookstore as a resource for children and families.
