Bank Street Hosts an Evening with Dr. Tovah Klein

On Thursday, November 21, Bank Street School for Children welcomed Dr. Tovah Klein, renowned author, psychology professor, and director of Barnard College Center for Toddler Development, for an insightful discussion on parenting, resilience, and navigating life’s challenges. With over 30 years of experience, Dr. Klein’s work has supported thousands of families in understanding the importance of play, handling work-family challenges, guiding emotional development, and working through tough times.

The evening began with introductory remarks from Doug Knecht, Dean of Children’s Programs and Head of the School for Children. Knecht framed the conversation with Dr. Klein as an opportunity to explore the enduring importance of love, care, and empathy in fostering healthy growth and development in children, which are foundational elements of Bank Street’s holistic approach to teaching and learning.

In her talk, Dr. Klein shared findings from her “Parenting During Covid” study, as well as practical strategies drawn from her acclaimed books, Raising Resilience and How Toddlers Thrive. She addressed the unique challenges families faced during the pandemic, emphasizing the value of consistent parenting, small acts of kindness, and supportive environments in helping children adapt to adversity and build resilience.

Expanding on the theme of empathy, Dr. Klein recounted stories from her work in Japan and the United States, highlighting how cultural differences in teaching and parenting styles can lead to challenges but also growth. She shared personal anecdotes, including experiences working with children and families after a tsunami, to illustrate how empathy, creativity, and open communication can help families approach complex situations in healthy ways.

Another key focus of the discussion was the importance of teaching children to embrace imperfection and understand life’s nuances. Dr. Klein stressed the importance of guiding children beyond black-and-white thinking to develop emotional strength and adaptability. “Resilience isn’t about avoiding challenges,” she explained. “It’s about helping children face adversity with the tools and support they need to adapt and grow. Small, consistent acts of kindness and a supportive environment can make all the difference.”

The talk culminated in a Q&A session in which participants were invited to ask Dr. Klein questions and share their own experiences with parenting and education. Guests then had the opportunity to meet Dr. Klein and purchase signed copies of her books in the Bank Street lobby.

This inspiring event reinforced the essential role of love, care, and empathy in parenting, teaching, and community-building, offering attendees actionable strategies to help children thrive in an ever-changing world.
